Gr 5-8-- A thorough, knowledgable and interesting book for dog lovers. Benjamin stresses throughout that one's goal is to have a dog to be proud of; who is safe and fun; and who knows that you and other humans are top dog. The concepts are taught simply on one or two pages with lists and explanations where needed. Cartoon drawings illustrate concepts humorously while the photographs show them in real-life situations. Although this book could be used by a child to train a dog, Benjamin suggests family and friends' involvement also. But best of all, Benjamin tells why it is so important to train a dog; why certain things need to be learned; and why dog owners must train with the gentlest method that works. This will be invaluable to young (or old) owners of new dogs. --Carole B. Kirkpatrick, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, Wash.
