PreS-Gr 3 Donovan spends a boring day at his grandparents' house until he imagines a monster. Encouraged by his grandmother, he embarks on a monster hunt. Broom in hand and dog by his side, Donovan enters the bedroom where Grandpa is sleeping. Grandpa enlivens the game with a yell that frightens Donovan before the two join in laughter. Although the story is slight, the loving relationship of grandparents and child comes through well. Some flat dialogue mars the otherwise adequate writing. The watercolor pictures are reassuring, and the layout is attractive. Small pictures on text pages advance the story and alternate with full-page illustrations. Donovan's dog is expecially well drawn, with his facial expressions and body postures revealing the emotions he shares with Donovan. Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, Minn.
