Overview

It’s a cold, snowy night, and a big, soft bear sleeps soundly in his cave. A small hare wanders by, and since his ears are so cold, he snuggles up in the bear’s cozy den. Before long, a fox comes along with the same idea. "You may come in," says the hare, "but don’t wake up the bear!" As the night wears on, the nest of sleeping animals expands until a mouse with a cold curls up right in the bear’s ear—and wakes him up with a loud sneeze!

Warm, playful illustrations and a repeating refrain make this bedtime book perfect for year-round reading.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jane Harrington
Wintry, earth-toned watercolor spreads chronicle the late night arrival of animals to the snowy den of a hibernating bear. Each furry forest friend complains that a different body part is cold, and each ends up snuggling in with the sleeping bear. The hare—the first to arrive—warns each new visitor with the repeating line, "But don't wake up the bear!" Of course, the bear does wake up, somewhat ferociously. The animals scatter in fear of being eaten, but the story takes a cute twist when the bear trudges by them and heads straight to a berry bush to satisfy his hunger. Though very similar to the popular Bear Snores On, it is not as artfully illustrated nor as cleverly written. Still, it is a nice read-aloud, and the use of fairly repetitive text makes it an appropriate choice for the learning-to-read crowd. Snowflake backgrounds on the white pages and some words done in large, fun type are nice touches. The book has been recently re-issued as a board book, and this format may fit the intended audience better than the original picture book. Reviewer: Jane Harrington
