The Styles are the father and son duo of Jackie V. and Joey Diamond whose specialization in soul and doo wop oldies have made them a popular club act. What saves the Styles (and this brief disc) from being simply an exercise in nostalgia is the fact that both of these guys can really sing, and their covers of classic songs are more interpretive than note for note reproductions. Jackie generally handles the doo wop material while Joey takes on the funkier soul stuff. Check out Jackie's high tenor lead vocal on the version of the Passions' "This Is My Love" which opens this set and then listen to Joey's run at Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" or Wilson Pickett's "In the Midnight Hour" to get a sense of what these two guys bring to the table. It's not like the Styles rewrite the history of soul or doo wop here, and this release is hardly essential, but it is a lot of fun.
