Very basic projects. If you know the basics, this is not for you, but a good starting point for teens seeking to learn the basics of embroidery. The projects seems geared toward teens.

This is a great book that covers basic embroidery stitches with clear pictures and instructions. There are also many projects included, and even if you don't plan on using the patterns on the project, the instructions are clear enough that you could do the project but adapt it with different designs. You have to have a clear understanding of how to transfer patterns because none of the patterns included are in iron-on ready format. Some of the projects even require simply sewing but no sewing machine, which is good. I honestly was hoping for a book that would explain more about 'doodle stitching' and tapping into my creativity to make my own designs.

I was complaining about the state of embroidery and the lack of anything that I would actually be interested in making, and then, browsing aimlessly in a bookstore, what do I see but Doodle Stitching by Aimee Ray. I loved almost every page, but some favorites were the sweet dreams baby pillow and the felt forest creatures. These are cute designs that aren't your traditional flowers and well... flowers, but they aren't the other extreme of the angry punk rock craze ala subversive cross stitch or the cheesy hula girls/goth/pirates ala sublime stitching. Just nice simple designs with practical uses.

Aimee Ray's "Doodle Stitching" is a great beginner's guide to embroidery, with clear, simple instructions and detailed images. It includes not only adorable designs to embroider, but instructions for fun projects as well.

I bought this book as a gift for my nieces (ages 12-16). The ideas are fun and the illustrations are very clear and helpful. By the next day, they were already using patterns from the book to do beautiful embroidery!
