Technology has become such an ingrained part of our lives, but the majority of people are still unsure about most aspects of it, especially as the gray areas of society and technology are getting bigger and grayer every single day as new innovations are introduced. In Dot Complicated, Randi Zuckerberg successfully addresses the issues around modern, digital living while bridging the gap between tech and everyday life. As a spokesperson for Facebook in the media, Zuckerberg knew how to recognize and relate to the human side of technology, not just the people behind the computer code. As she launched her website, Dot Complicated, Zuckerberg made it her mission to un-complicate technology for us, listing tips on social media etiquette and keeping a balance between technological connections and real-life connections. Throughout the book, Zuckerberg reminds us of both the upsides and downsides of an increasingly connected world. As a computer science student, it’s important to understand both sides of technology— the coding aspect as well as the consumer aspect of technology. And, it’s important to keep in mind that, as much as technology has dominated our lives, there should be a balance between the use of technology and real life experiences and connections with our families and friends.

It's 2016 and technology is undoubtedly a huge part of our daily lives. Randi Zuckerberg, sister of Facebook mogul Mark Zuckerberg, describes from her first person point of view the perks and downfalls of social media, technology, and how to navigate the gray areas that come with it. As a computer science student, it is both encouraging and inspiring to hear about all the ways that being a contributor to the creation of technology and social media platforms can be so lucrative. Zuckerberg describes her experience with arranging a lifestream with President Obama, sharing with millions of Americans a speech that was given in a warehouse in Silicon Valley amongst various cameras and shared simply through computers. Possessing the ability to harness this sharing power is like having super speed and being everywhere at once; from simply one location a message can be shared with people all over the world, and allows them to actively contribute and share their opinions. It is the software of a democratic country! Zuckerberg documents all these events over a timeframe between her career beginnings as a newly graduated college student, through working with Facebook as it grew, and eventually pursuing and starting new ventures. The novel is an intimate documentation of the way technology can influence someone's life in such a personal way. She describes an occasion where after a family get together, an image of the entire family was shared privately on Facebook, but soon went public after a shared screenshot, resulting in twitter backlash and media coverage. Though Zuckerberg says she was fully aware of how the privacy settings worked, she knew that there was a possibility that the image could have gone public (and it did). This is an example of the "gray areas" of using social media. People use technology daily, and though know how to use it, are sometimes unaware of all the different factors that come with it. This book provided a fresh take on "etiquette", illustrating it in the 21st century form of the word; "social media etiquette". As a young tech user and student of tech development, I became more aware of these different rules and am more aware of how to use social media for good, as well as teach others how to do so swell. Instead of having a webpage define who I am, I can use it to express myself and share useful as well as creative things. In "Dot Complicated", Marni Zuckerberg illustrates not only how one can navigate the inevitable use of technology in modern society, but use it for good, while reminding us that life is based off of real experiences too, and at some point, it serves us to unplug and enjoy life IRL.
