Double Alchemy: Climax by Susan Mac Nicol

It begins with a Book of Shadows discovered by a London coven. The grimoire is as dangerous as it is rare, which is why it evokes modern-day warlock Quinn Fairmont’s desire. He collects objects of great power and beauty—like his lover, Cade Mairston.

Against all odds he and Cade found each other, but their perils have just begun. First is the ex-lover who once held Quinn in thrall. And, someone has been killing warlocks.

Could it be one of their own kind? There are those too who would challenge Quinn’s power in their quest to overthrow him as Grand Master. Or is the danger something darker, something invoked inadvertently, rising from the shadows, building from the very inside of a man until it brings an end with a quick flash of light? Of the truth, the surface has only been scratched. Now Quinn and Cade must go deeper and find both answers and an end. They must learn what lurks in the hearts of men...and whether it seeks to love or destroy.

In my opinion Climax is one of those sequels which outshines its predecessor! Susan Mac Nicol has developed the Double Alchemy plot, adding several new characters and evolving the personalities of already established ones.  Although I am a huge fan of Susan Mac Nicol's m/m novels, which generally feature intense male protagonists,  I loved the introduction of Valensia, the witch Regina. She is attractive, powerful, assertive and sexy. Quinn and Valensia share a personal history in which he, a man normally the predator, became the prey and I think this moment of weakness, though cruel on Valensia's part, helps him become more accessible.   After being stabbed Quinn has to release Cade to the sprites in the lake hoping they will heal him; this is an emotional scene and following this Cade steps forward into the more powerful role I wanted to see him in during the first book. Quinn finally adjusts to Cade fulfilling his 'other' identity and because of his acceptance of a more equal relationship I was more willing to change my opinion of him.  The plot of Climax is less 'busy' than the first installment but is still full of magical conflict, romance and passionate sex scenes!! Again I am reminded that Susan Mac Nicol is one of my favourite authors and my Kindle library would not be complete without her fantastic novels!! I received this as a complimentary review copy, but this has had no influence on my opinion.
