In his Author’s Note following the heart-pounding climax to Double Dare, Michael Madigan virtually apologizes for taking a few fictional liberties with the Dolores Valley in Southwestern Colorado. No apologies needed! His creation of a few locations that don’t really exist only helps to make a fast-paced, adventure tale all the more believable. And enjoyable. The keys to good fiction are compelling characters (check), a plot that is full of surprises (check), a setting that fits the story (check), and an ending that leaves the reader wanting more (check). When the desire for vicarious thrill is satisfied as well, the novel is a total winner. In short, Double Dare Ranch is Blake Cutter ‘s dream, a “do” ranch where the truly adventurous can test their mettle kayaking boiling rapids, careening down curvy mountain bike trails, and engaging in various other outdoor pursuits—in search of elusive prizes known as coups. In the ranch’s first year of operation in the rugged land some call “The Disappointment Country,” Cutter encounters two beautiful women—each with designs he does not recognize until it’s too late—and a sinister man with a mysterious past who values only his own life. An assortment of quirky and curious neighbors and ranch hands completes the mix. Will Cutter survive the dual threats of wildfire and cunning? Will Double Dare Ranch make it to its first winter season? This page-turner leaves those questions hanging until the end. And then there’s a bonus, explained in the back of the book beneath the heading: “You’ve read about Double Dare’s challenges, now try one of your own!” In all, Double Dare is not to be missed.
