In 2005 Lone Hill Jazz reissued Down Home, a peach of an album recorded by the Zoot Sims Quartet for the Bethlehem label on June 7, 1960. Here is an opportunity to savor the collective chemistry between Zoot, pianist Dave McKenna, bassist George Tucker, and drummer Dannie Richmond, who was taking a break from the Charles Mingus Jazz Workshop to participate in one of his periodic involvements with Bethlehem (see Richmond's excellent work as a member of the Herbie Nichols Trio in November 1957). In addition to six unedited alternate takes (providing a fly-on-the-wall opportunity to eavesdrop as the musicians and the recording engineer set up the tunes and discuss how the music works), the producers have added a lovely rendition of "These Foolish Things" recorded live on November 21, 1959, when Sims and McKenna were joined by bassist Bill Crow and drummer Ed Shaughnessy. Anyone who really loves the Lester Young-inspired sounds of Zoot Sims should have this edition of Down Home.
