Overview

Downward Mule by Jenna Hammond, Steve Page

On the one hoof, others tease him.

On the other hoof, they don’t really know him.

Sam’s a secret yogi.

Join the barnyard menagerie on a yoga journey. Who knew a mule could be so cool? Sam doesn’t at first. Sometimes it just takes confidence (and yoga) to believe it.

About the Author

Jenna Hammond is a freelance writer living in New York City. Like Sam, she's also a closet yogi. Before parenthood, she led family yoga classes on weekends with a weekday desk job as editor-in-chief. Writing about a girl with special needs who walks because of yoga motivated Jenna's children's yoga certification. She holds a master's degree in journalism from New York University and a bachelor's degree in English with a minor in French from the University of Michigan. Find her on the beaches and ranches of Montauk, or the occasional barnyard on family travels.

For as long as he can remember, Steve has had a pencil in his hand. With this love of drawing it was only natural that he would follow a career in the arts. After many successful years as a graphic designer, working for a variety of publishing companies, he decided to follow his heart and do what he loves most - create weird and wacky characters.

Obsessed. I never write reviews, but couldn't resist for this one. I have 3 little boys who are all very different - but! They all love this book. It is so engaging, so funny, adorable and it really inspires my sons! They just want to get up and practice their yoga and keep reading it again and again and again. I adore this book and can't wait for the next one. So good!

All of the animal characters are inspirational while being cute and light hearted. Downward Mule is well written as it teaches yoga poses in a fun, kid-friendly way. I highly recommend this book to teachers, parents, and kids of all ages! Downward Mule is the perfect book to read aloud in a classroom, give as a gift and fun to share with the kids in your life.

My kids are obsessed with Downward Mule. It was the first picture book to hold my 2 year old's attention the entire way through. He thinks the characters are hysterical and seems captivated by every turn of the page, especially when he's trying to find the mini mouse in the illustrations a la Goodnight Moon from my childhood! My older child gets a kick out of doing donkey kicks and other movement with Sam Mule, the farmer's daughter and the various animals on the farm. Add in the plot that it's important to honor your hidden talent and be yourself, no matter what others might think, and it's a win for anyone reading the picture book.
