About the Author

Jackson Stein grew up and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. Before becoming a writer he worked as a 3d animator, commercial director, musician and bartender, When he's not writing, you can find Jackson staying up all night, enjoying a rare steak by moonlight, and drinking a fine glass of red...wine. He would like readers to know he does not now, nor has he ever, slept in a casket. All of those rumors are completely false

Mr. Stein has woven an interesting story of how Vlad the Impaler became the more notoriously known Dracula. Beginning with the first word in the book, I couldn't put it down until I reached the very end. The author tells such a detailed and descriptive story that it kept me enthralled and never bored. The story is that of young Prince Vlad coming of age and wanting to prove to his father that he is worthy of standing beside him to protect and further their kingdom. Prince Vlad has always looked up to his father only to discover that when he returns from a long time away in battle that he is not the father Vlad remembers. Vlad's father is now mean and vindictive to everyone. You have to read this to see how Vlad defends the throne against the darkness of his father to find that he is now the host of that very evil he fought against. Unfortunately, that is were Mr. Stein leaves the reader. I am hanging on and can't wait to read the next installment. If you love the story of Dracula and have always wondered how he came to be, you will not be disappointed in Mr. Stein's story.

Vlad the Impaler has long been considered to be the inspiration for Bram Stoker's tale of Dracula, but this story takes that tale further with the story of King Vlad's son, Vlad III. As young Vlad nears the age of maturity, ready to assume his rightful place besides his father at this time of war with the Ottomans, he notices drastic changes in his father's behavior, as well as an undefined illness that seems to be effecting the young women of his kingdom. Can he prove his worth to his father and also help these stricken young girls? I really enjoyed this story on the origins of Dracula, interwoven with tidbits from the actual legends of Vlad the Impaler. Disclosure: I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was quickly drawn in to this story. It was very atmospheric, interesting and showed many nuances of the historic period. I liked Vlad and his servants. The story and the way it was written was interesting. I understood & felt Vlad's emotions. I understood and could relate to him. I liked the writing style that seemed to paint the scenery and mood. The emotional depth was handled very well. There was much to appreciate and enjoy. I got hooked quickly by the story and continued to read as the story became darker and darker. I basically knew the story of Vlad the Impaler so, I knew this would be pretty rough for me to read. I'm usually okay with most gore and blood doesn't bother me. But this book became increasingly uncomfortable for me. I do not like horror. I avoid it. This became tough for me since I grew to care about the main characters and felt compelled to finish reading. I so want(ed) to know how the outcome of the story came about. Which Vlad became the Impaler & how it happened. As I read, I became increasingly conflicted until it was just too much for me. Sadly, I did not finish this book. However, it was by no fault of the skilled author. The fact that I got as far as I did past my comfort zone was very telling of his talent to draw me in and keep me there despite my fears and discomfort. This is a high complement. I highly recommend this book to horror, hardcore vampire and Dracula/Vlad fans. Enjoy.

Very informational without sounding insincere. I loved the author's take on the classic Dracula. Imaginative and well written. A definite must read!

New author's take on Dracula (his early years before being turned), very imaginative and well written.  Am I recomending this book  to you?  Oh yeah!

Shallow story but entertaining... some incorrect situations such as diagnosing someone with shock due to the blood loss (no such accurate medical terms in 15th century); mention of tomatoes which didn't come to Europe until after 1500's and nobility didn't eat them until after 1800's... silly too naive boy personality. Does the job if you can hang on to.

With the right screen writer, director, and cast this would actually make a great movie. Hollywood is always looking at books for movies; they should look at this one. Very different take on the Dracula story....one that really grabs you. I tend to stay away from vampire stories because they have become so cliche; however, this story is not really a vampire story per se......enjoy!!!

The first-person perspective adds an interesting twist to the story, but in general the writing is matter-of-fact and rather dull. If I had not gotten the first book for free, I would have felt ripped-off by the 150-page length. Skip it.

Part one of three-book story; the other books are only $3.00. The story flows nicely; at the end of one chapter, another picks up right where the other left off. I liked the first book, and so immediately bought the other two.

What a wonderful tale of how it all began. The author did a fantastic job with the characters and storyline. The story is a short read but packed with everything needed to entertain the reader. Highly recommend!
