Overview

In the world of Pern, Harpers with great musical ability are held in extreme regard. This is why the young, mischievous Piemur carries himself with so much pride, for he sings like an angel. But when his voice begins to change, Piemur loses all confidence and questions his role within Harper Hall.

Incapable of singing, Piemur is sent on various errands by Masterharper Robinton, including the task of learning the complicated beats of the messenger drums. Piemur has no clue of the grand adventures that await him, and he'll need to find the courage within himself to survive.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kathleen Foucart
The third book in the "The Harper Hall Trilogy" follows Piemur as he discovers his place in the world of Pern. When Piemur's beautiful soprano voice begins to change to his adult tone, he is devastated. Singing was his only real talent at Harper Hall, and without that, he fears he could be sent home, yet the Masterharper has another assignment for the clever young Piemur—he is to learn drumbeats, the best way of communicating over the distances of Pern, especially for those who lack Fire Lizards. The other apprentices in the drum heights, however, do not take kindly to their new associate, and soon Piemur learns his more carefree days have led to a rather disastrous reputation when it comes to keeping secrets. Piemur is determined to fix his problems on his own, and he learns his lessons quickly, but when a quick decision leads to an adventure he never dreamed of, Piemur soon discovers where he belongs. Though followers of the first two books in the series might be slightly disappointed to find themselves with Piemur instead of Menolly, it soon proves an exciting tale. Reviewer: Kathleen Foucart

This is the third book in the Harper Hall trilogy of McCaffrey; it adds a new chapter to the Harper Hall story that began with Dragonsong, in a more mature way, and continues the story of the Fire Lizards of Pern. Beloved characters Menolly, Piemur, Robinton and Sebel are revisited and we find out more details about their lives and those of other prominent people of Pern that are not touched upon in the parent trilogy of Dragonriders. This book follows Dragonsinger (luckily with more thrill and story) and preceeds The White Dragon.
