In the wake of birth and betrayal, Ushna takes the God Ashur to Tristan in a last desperate bid to save Tristan's life-and is helpless to do anything but watch as Ashur instead buries him in a grave. Though he has no desire to go on living, having now lost Brian and Tristan, Ushna has no choice. Not only do their children need him, the mysterious Simurgh has come out of hiding and forces him to continue on-for there is much to do and little time to do it, especially with treachery and danger closing in on them from every side.

h my stars this is the best book of the series I've read yet. My heart broke all over again as we watch Ashur put Tristan into the earth from Ushna's point of view. Then we meet Séana in her full form as she guards over the shattered Ushna and all the of his pups, including naming Astar. I could understand the concerns on who to trust after Tristan was lured to the prison of Mithra and the he-boar Verethragna by Daniel in hopes of killing Tristan and stealing his infants to open the King's Tomb. What was heart breaking the most was WHO the betrayer ultimately turned out to be. But all is not lost as Tristan and Brian both swear their loyalties to Tiamet, and are "reborn" in her Sanctuary fully grown and Tristan bearing the titular gift of their Goddess, his eye and missing fingers replaced with dragon parts. Brian is a full grown man despite his murder at the age of eleven at the hands of Daniel's father. We also learn what causes that distinctive carrion smell to Daniel.....and that not all True Bloods hate the Lycans. The ending is not nearly as dramatic as previous books though it's certainly intense in and of itself. But I'm mentally preparing myself for the battles ahead in book six.
WOW! Best yet! Almost 300 hundred pages of none stop action, emotion, passion, dreams, reality, betrayals, friends formed and lost. As they say, The show must go on. So even though Ushna knows Tristan is lost but not dead he must continue. For the pups, for Theo’s kids. For the greater good. But as the months slip by, Ushna slips more and more into a deeper despair and we can feel his pain, he’s losing weight, only focused on the pups and not really the goings on around him. Until his hand is forced, and he must make a decision, luckily just in time. The reunion of Tristan, Brian and Ushna is bitter sweet and short lived with all the battles and back stabbing going on. Its hard for these three to figure out who to trust and to have a minute to themselves. But one thing is for sure, the love and connection between them is pure and solid. You can feel it, almost see it coming off the pages. Corey, plays a big roll is this book, and we finally find out what happened to his twin flame. Gregori is also set up for his big something, I hope. Even though you’ve got a lot of players, no one really new. But just like all of Lexi’s novels they are detailed and intense and command your attention. The plot, sub plot, players, secondary and even third tier charters are important or she wouldn’t put them in. From the nurse maids to the drangonets. (BTW, so cute and I want one) We are left with another cliffy, one we should have seen coming but somehow didn’t, idiot!
