Overview

Dragon's Fire (Dragonriders of Pern #19) by Anne McCaffrey, Todd McCaffrey, Dick Hill

Bringing fresh wonders and dangers to light in the skies of Pern, Anne McCaffrey and her son, Todd, who demonstrated his writing talents in the bestselling novels Dragon’s Kin and Dragonsblood, return with their second collaboration: a thrilling adventure of discovery and fate.

Pellar is an orphan taken in by Masterharper Zist. Though born mute, Pellar is a gifted tracker, and when Zist sets off to take over as harper for Natalon’s coal-mining camp, Pellar -- along with his fire-lizard, Chitter -- joins him on a secret mission of his own: to find out if reported thefts of coal are the work of the Shunned, criminals condemned to a life of wandering and hardship.

Halla is one of the children of the Shunned. Though innocent of their parents’ crimes, these children have inherited their cruel punishment. Lack of food, shelter, and clothes is their lot; hope is unknown to them. And what future would they hope for? Without a hold to call their own, there will be no protection for them when the lethal Thread inevitably falls again. Life is even tougher for Halla. Her family gone, she must fend for herself. Yet despite the brutality of her surroundings, Halla is kind and gentle, devoted to those more helpless than she.

As depraved as Halla is good, Tenim is in league with Tarik, a crooked miner from Camp Natalon, who helps him steal coal in exchange for a cut of the profit. But Tenim soon realizes there is a lot more to be made from firestone, the volatile mineral that enables the dragons of Pern to burn Thread out of the sky. Tenim doesn’t care what he has to do, or whom he has to kill, in order to corner the market.

Cristov is Tarik’s son. Dishonored by his father’s greed and treachery, the boy must make amends somehow, even if it means risking his life by mining the volatile firestone, which detonates on contact with the slightest drop of moisture.

When the last remaining firestone mine explodes in flames, a desperate race begins to find a new deposit of the deadly but essential mineral, for without it there can be no defense against Thread. But Tenim has a murderous plan to turn tragedy to his own advantage, and only Pellar, Halla, and Cristov can stop him -- and ensure that there will be a future for all on the world of the Dragonriders.

In eighteen years, the Red Star will orbit around Pern and the parasitical spoor will rain down on the land destroying all organic matter. The fire breathing dragons are Pern¿s first line of defense but to burn thread out of the sky, the volatile substance firestone is needed and only one mine is operational. That mine is destroyed when the Shunned Tarik, set up by his partner Tenim, causes an explosion that destroys the facility. --- Tenim, who has a grudge against Tarik¿s son Cristov, sets him up so that it looks like he stole something from a weyr leader. However, Cristov volunteers to open a new mine where he insists firestone waits to be dug up. The leaders of Pern have a plan to save the Shunned outcasts and the innocents who are with them. However Tenim has a countermeasure that would put all Pern in jeopardy and the only person who can stop him is a person long thought dead who doesn¿t have any recollection of who he is. --- DRAGON¿S FIRE is very different from most of the other Pern books as team McCaffrey focuses on the dark elements in the planet¿s society who are willing to commit crimes, some heinous in nature, if it means turning a profit. There are more villains than heroes in this exciting science fiction tale, but the protagonists who put Pern before themselves are willing to risk their own lives for future generations of Pernese. The Pern saga is generations old but its creator and her son keep coming up with new ideas and original storylines to keep readers happy. --- Harriet Klausner

A rousing science fiction adventure, Dragon¿s Fire joins the McCaffreys¿ other Pern novels as one of the best. The plot races as the leaders of Pern prepare for the first fall of Thread in almost 200 years. However, we only care about what happens because we care about the masterfully drawn characters. The ¿Shunned¿ of Pern is a central problem. It is in Masterharper Zist who has been mulling the problem of the ¿Shunned,¿ those who are forced to leave their communities to live on the fringes. Those who are shunned are the unrepentant criminals of Pern, but as in our society today, justice varies from place to place. Worse yet is the plight of the children of the Shunned. Through an accident of birth, these children are shunned by default, and many lie in unmarked graves before they learn to walk. Halla is one, and as she grew, she became a great tracker and a mother for other children she and Moran, a failed and drunken Apprentice Harper, collect in their travels. Pellar, a mute orphan taken in by Masterharper Zist, is sent on Moran¿s original task, to contact, gain the trust of, and learn about the Shunned. Although Pellar has no voice, he is a great listener and musician. Even more important is his ability to survive on the trail, to think quickly, and to talk to dragons and their kin. Cristov, the son of a newly shunned miner, feels his father¿s betrayal keenly and volunteers to search for the firestone necessary to the survival of all. As treacherous as Halla, Pellar, and Cristov are honorable, Tenim, one of the children saved by Moran, has devised a plan to corner the market on firestone and destroy the rest. How Tenim is thwarted, the Shunned given a chance to return to society before the fall of Thread, and Halla, Pellar, and Cristov, each in their own way, save Pern makes a stirring story told by master storytellers. If poetry is the best words in their best order, then the last lines of the story are sheer poetry.

Mr. McCaffrey is not only filling his mother's literary "shoes" but blazing trails of his own (to mix my metafores just a little). I very much look forward to reading many, many more books (no doubt) soon to be written by him.
