DRIVEN is the latest installment (and longer novella) in Kelley Armstrong’s paranormal OTHERWORLD series focusing on the Stonehaven Wolf Pack of New York. For followers of the series Kelley brings together the baddest of the bad-Malcolm Danvers- as the newest and most unwelcome member of Elena’s Pack. Malcolm has been in hiding on the other side of the world, and the psychotic killer wants to rejoin the Pack. Told from Elena’s first person point of view, DRIVEN focuses on the ritualistic and very personal murders of the Cain family-another familiar name to fans of the series. This time, the Cains are targeted by an unknown source, as their numbers begin to deteriorate very rapidly, and Elena and Clay are called in to investigate. Malcolm will be offered his first official duty with the New York Pack as more bodies begin to pile up. What ensues is the hunt for the people (and wolf) responsible for terrorizing the Cain family, and the reasons for the sadistic killings. Be forewarned, there are numerous graphic scenes focusing on the aftermath of the killings. DRIVEN reveals the growth and development of some of our favorite wolves. Love, maturity, family and children have altered Clay’s view of the world including his tolerance for Malcolm’s return but that is not to say the Malcolm can ever be trusted. Clay is now the Pack enforcer, and he doesn’t take any crap from the aging wolf. Malcolm, on the other hand, is an old wolf set in his ways, and has a difficult time adjusting to a new leadership, and the Pack’s new way of handling the mutts. A number of our favorite wolves are front and center including Elena, Clay, Jeremy and Nick as well as Reese and Noah, and Reese’s friend Madison (the daughter of another wolf). Elena and Clay’s children-nine year old Kate and Logan-let Malcolm know they aren’t afraid of the man who has terrorized the Pack. Again, for fans of the series, if you have read most of the recent novellas, we were previously introduced to a half –demon name Vanessa-Nick’s current girlfriend- and the woman he is hoping to claim as his mate. Karl, Hope, Jamie, Antonio and Paige are present byway of mention-only. DRIVEN is a suspenseful, disturbing and welcome addition to Kelley Armstrong’s OTHERWORD SERIES. The characters are familiar, impassioned and sometimes controversial. With the return of Malcolm in THIRTEEN confusion reigned and Kelley could not let this particular return go without some sort of response. DRIVEN reveals Malcolm’s intent and the reasons for his return to the Pack; I somehow think he may get what he wants. Kelley has released a number of novellas, short stories and anthologies since the ‘final’ Otherworld installment of THIRTEEN, focusing on the Wolf Pack, and with it comes numerous looks at Elena and the Wolves. If fans have not kept up with the smaller releases, there is quite a bit of story line and history missing-the smaller stories are revealing plenty of information and growth for the Pack-new members, growing families, potential happily ever afters.

I fell for this series back in 2004, when the urban fantasy genre was still new and shiny. The first 4 book in the Otherworld series were out. The first were 2 about Elena, Clay and the werewolves, while the next 2 were about Paige, Lucas and magic. For awhile the series flirted with Paranormal Romance, each book mainly telling the story of a couple in this wonderful world of paranormal creatures, all intertwined with one another. Each book drove not only that couple's story forward, but the story of the entire universe. As a new book in the series hasn't been published since 2012, it looks to be over. Since that time, however, the author has been diving into short stories and novellas, continuing to tell the stories of some of it's more memorable characters, namely the wolves. They have been branched out under the Otherworld Stories moniker. Many of the more recent single titles in print, are only available in print in limited hardbound books, illustrated and numbered. If you are more interested in just the verbage, the ebook versions are much less expensive but don't contain the illustrations. I admire that the author is continuing this wonderful universe for those, like myself, who can't seem to get enough. I really didn't want things to end, and now they don't have to. If you, like myself, wanted more Elena & Clay, you should take a look a the Otherworld Stories series. Just remember, these really aren't stand alone books. If you try to start here, you are missing a vast and elaborate backstory that you really shouldn't miss. This was a great addition in the continuation of the series. I gave it 4 stars.

Kelley Armstrong immediately draws the reader in. Driven takes place a few months after the events of Forsaken and starts with American Pack Alpha Elena's solution to the Malcolm situation. Next up on the agenda, the Pack Meet and discourse with the precocious twins - highly entertaining, interrupted by a crisis that involves the Cain Clan featuring Davis Cain (briefly met in The Puppy Plan). Ms Armstrong is a virtuoso at creating humor during tense situations and crafting characters that I adore and can't get enough of. Driven is an enticing (hopefully temporary) wrap up to Otherworld and while there is background information provided within the story, I recommend the whole series, but at least the werewolf books be read prior.

I am so glad that, though the series has officially “ended,” there are still more Otherworld stories to discover! I’ve been a fan of the Women of the Otherworld (now just called the Otherworld series) for a long time. Of all the races and characters in the series, the werewolves have always been one of my favorites. I love seeing Elena in the role of Alpha of the pack, and I particularly love her children. I can’t wait until they start getting their own stories. I did notice that I’ve either missed a few stories or just haven’t read them in a while; I was unfamiliar with some of the characters and events mentioned. I know I missed the Bounty Hunt novella as that has not come out in an ebook format. It seems I missed other references to the Cain family, too. That gives me a GREAT excuse to go back and read the whole series over again, which I’ve been wanting to do, anyway. :) What I like most about this story is the way in which it shows a family dealing with the impact of a toxic person. We all have THOSE people in the family — the troublemaker, the energy vampire, the one no one wants to see but can’t always avoid. In many cases, this person has a profound negative impact on everyone they touch. Learning to deal with a person like this can take years of therapy and introspection. It is great to see how Elena’s family deals with their toxic family member in a variety of ways. Copy provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
