An exceptional encyclopedia of DSP techniques, from signals and systems to analog filters, digital filter designs and advanced statistical signal processing techiques. It is truly the best book I have on my shelf (and I have quite a few on this subject). You can just go to a chapter and find the background and techniques. Before I found this book I would spend a lot of time hunting for the right book, then wade through the math to find out what the important information was and how to use it. You can contrast it to college texts that are overly theoretical, and beginner books that try to trivialize the subject by dealing only in audio and filters. Instead, I think this is an exceptional text for working professionals. The mathematics are kept to a respectable level, used for algorithms or when important theoretical concepts are introduced. Explanations are mostly jargon-free and concise (the exception being in the chapters on speech processing, but that whole field has its own vocabulary). Several topics such as filter design have procedures written step-by-step for easy use. I did not find the companion CD of any real use. It is a large collection of C++ classes, and I think the demonstration of various algorithms could be better done in a clean C function set without the class abstractions. Straight C for nasty functions like FFTs could be imported into an embedded processor for some real use. The treatment on statistical signal processing (especially in high-resolution spectrum estimation) could use some more background and qualitative discussion. Sadly there is almost no treatment on communications systems (matched filters and coders). However these are minor when compared to the vast wealth of knowledge contained in the overall text.
