Description: This is a concise collection of basic knowledge about different aspects of anesthesiology, presented in a question and answer format. The previous edition was published in 2011.
Purpose: As an overview of anesthesiology, the book encompasses a little bit of everything from physiology and pharmacology to clinical science. It is meant as a quick introduction to anesthesia for medical students or new residents, a worthy objective, which helps novices feel at home when in the operating room.
Audience: The target audience is medical students and new anesthesiology residents, but anyone will find it helpful. It can be a handy source for quick review before a written test or oral board.
Features: The first section deals with mundane aspects of anesthesia, such as respiratory physiology, electrolyte issues, volume resuscitation including transfusion issues, and airway management. Next, the book covers the pharmacology of different drugs, including inotropes. Section three details preoperative evaluation and preparation. The next two sections cover different monitors used in the conduct of anesthesia, with a separate chapter on recovery. Sections six and seven cover the use of anesthesia in different disease states affecting different organ systems as well as special anesthetic considerations required in different age groups, which is covered in depth. Trauma, heart transplantation, bypass physiology, lung isolation, and pain management are all covered in separate chapters. The hallmark of the book is the question and answer format, which conveys information quickly and clearly. The book avoids too much detail, but provides enough information to make it a learning exercise. Key points are reiterated at the end of chapters in a bullet format. This is not a substitute for a textbook and it's not a manual of anesthesia. It has very limited information on regional anesthesia or ultrasound physics, but this takes nothing away from its value. An online version is also available, which makes it very accessible and easy to search anytime, anywhere.
Assessment: This a good start for anyone who is rotating through anesthesia or is beginning a career in anesthesia. It discusses anesthesia in a practical way and does not overwhelm with abstract concerns or facts. Information is provided in a fun way. This edition has been pruned a bit since the 2011 edition, presenting fewer chapters and pages, but nonetheless it is still very compelling.
