What is the purpose of a novel? Is it merely to entertain? Should it make the reader think? What if it does a beautiful job of balancing both? The Duke's Handmaid by Caprice Hokstad tells the story of Keedrina, an "Itzi"-a people seen as inferior and ignorant by the reigning race, the "Elva." She is a simple farm girl, living the life society dictates for her race.with one exception: Keedrina's appearance is unusual for an Itzi and she is able to pass herself off as Elva in order to learn to read. Why does she do this? She knows she'll have no opportunity to use this skill in her present life. But her life is destined to change. Keedrina loses everything and is forced to make a choice in order to survive: either continue to scrape buy, nearly starving and alone, or give up the one thing she has-her freedom-in order to gain life through slavery. A paradox? You'll have to read to find out. The Duke's Handmaid is a smoothly written and beautiful story, and offers opportunity to ponder much about the true meaning of life and love at the same time. With depth of character, action, and a unique and vivid world, The Duke's Handmaid captured both my heart and my mind.

Although this book has all the elements of a typical romance, it is far from typical. Yes, we see attractive orphan meeting handsome duke and falling completely in love. We have a kidnapping or two, a few rescues, some cat fights between rivals. But what makes this book stand out is the culture it occupies. In this fantasy realm, slavery is a fact of life, regulated and legislated, and this romance takes place between master and slave. It is not a steamy sex novel; rather, this love is that of woman with a servant's heart desiring to give her entire self in service to the master she loves. Despite the small size, this isn't a "popcorn" romance. I didn't gobble my way to the bottom of the bucket and get hungry an hour later. This book was more like Milkduds - sweet, satisfying and chewy enough to slow you down to enjoy it. It stayed with me, too. I don't give five stars lightly, but the challenge of this book to my worldview compelled me to give them. I hope the sequel is just as satisfying.

I have owned this book for 2 years, and when I got around to reading I found myself wishing I hadn't waited so long. Constantly I found myself trying to sneek a page in here or there to further saturate myself in Latoph where I fell in love with a magnificent cast of unforgetable characters. Caprice brings her characters to life with such brilliance and poise you feel so connected and enthrawled within the world she created. I dislike reading, however I finally found a novel that has commanded my attention and my heart. Everyone should read THE DUKE'S HANDMAID.

I started reading The Duke's Handmaid and could not put it down! I was hooked from the first page! It is riveting! The writer made you really care about the characters and get to know them inside and out. I was swept away and felt like I was living in a different time and place. A real escape! I cannot WAIT for the next book to see what happens next. This is a MUST READ! A fantastic story, beautifully written...

Great characters and storyline. 1st you meet Keedrina the poor peasant girl whose family is killed by evil doers. She is now alone in the world with minimal means to support herself. She faces choices on how the rest of her life will play out.....enter the handsome Duke of Latoph. Keedrina asks to join the Duke's house as a 'Freewill Slave', the story follows Keedrina before, during and after her pledge to the Duke. Betrayal, deceipt, jealously, and love are interwoven in the story. Highly recommended for fans of romance, science fiction, fantasy and historical romance.

I loved this book! The characters and the world itself are so well-drawn that I felt like I came to know them over the course of reading the book. The plot has all the good stuff of fantasy: adventure, action, romance, weird creatures, treachery and surprises. What I liked best about the book was the unpredictability of the plot. There always seemed to be a new development when I least expected it. But the twists grew out of the plot in such a way that the story didn't venture from 'Wow, I wasn't expecting that!' territory into 'Where the hell did that come from?' land. I wouldn't want to give away the ending for anyone who hasn't read it yet, but it wraps up satisfactorily while leaving enough unanswered questions and loose ends to set up for a sequel (which I'm looking forward to). I'll definitely be recommending this book to -- well, anybody I can find to recommend it to.

Caprice Hokstad has given us a new world, often unsettling, but never boring. Her characters are alive and unique. I looked forward to escaping to the world Ms Hokstad created every night before bed. A must read for all fantasy lovers.

Keedrina is a young peasant who lives near a thriving seaport town. After marauders kill her family and burn her farmhouse, she meets Duke Vahn, who champions her cause, apprehends the outlaws, and dispenses justice. The duke offers Keedrina food and shelter in return for service. Can the simple farmgirl find a family among the refined servants in the duke¿s house? Not if the prejudiced and conniving duchess has her way! Book one of a fantasy trilogy, The Duke's Handmaid is a ¿coming of age¿ story with the flavor of a classic fairy tale. Having elements of mystery, adventure, and romance, as well as new-world discovery, prophesy, and magic, The Duke¿s Handmaid is strongly character-driven and defies sub-categorization.
