This personal peek into the life of a genuinely caring American woman working for the downtrodden, homeless, addicted, and hungry of the mid-20th century is very revealing. Dorothy was controversial in her day, and still is to some degree. She was fiercely pacifist and sometimes arrested for opposition to wars. Her personal life was often a struggle. These personal diaries reveal that she was sometimes uncertain of her own path, but they also reveal a tremendous love of God and of His people in need. I see in her own writing a very humble woman of strong Catholic-Christian faith who worked until exhausted day after day to provide food and shelter for some of society's most unappreciated members.
