Overview

A Brief History of Time

A Brief History of Time is based on cosmologist Stephen Hawking's 1988 bestseller of the same name. This anecdotal film concerns itself as much with Hawking's day-to-day life as it does with his unorthodox theories about the universe. Only the most close-minded viewer will be bothered by the ALS-suffering Hawking's physical appearance and his inability to move and speak without assistance (as narrator of the film, he utilizes a voice synthesizer, which he capriciously refers to as "my American accent"). Director Errol Morris inventively adopts a semi-dramatized approach to his interviews with Hawking's friends and relatives: they all appear in fabricated sets, and are lovingly photographed and lit as if they were starring in a film. Though of necessity a "talking heads" effort, A Brief History of Time is also cunningly and subtly cinematic.

Stephen Hawking is such a remarkable person. This history of his life and work is also remarkable. He has lived so far beyond his bounderies. His body may be held in the captivity of his illness but his mind is limitless. In the film Errol Morris lets the viewer travel with Steven as he moves through the universe toward the singularity that is leading to his event horizon, slowing down, becomming immobile and finally disappering but never lost just somewhere else.

This is a wonderful movie. The book is even better! I suggest reading the book (of the same title) and then watching the movie. Both contain lots of information and are well worth it.

I thought this movie was excellent. It gave a great insight into the days in Stephen Hawking's life. I've always been fascinated with Stephen Hawking, but, I really enjoyed this movie. It gave me a lot of great information on the author.
