Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
While other holiday specials search for the true meaning of Christmas, few capture the holiday’s essence as movingly as this Canadian adaptation of the timeless Dylan Thomas poem. Denholm Elliott appears as Old Geraint, who, one wet Christmas Eve, presents his loving grandson with a beautiful snow globe that has been in the family for generations. But the real gift is the memories he shares of the Christmases of his own youth. Less patient younger viewers may be put off by the unfamiliar Welsh accents and languid pace, but there is much here to enchant the entire family. Adults will bask in the language, while children will love the snowy scenes, holiday trappings, and rambunctious behavior. In one wondrous scene, a youngster shoots marbles at an army of toy soldiers, who come to life in his imagination, ready to do battle. With its child's-eye view of the holidays, this program is as warmly nostalgic as A Christmas Story, if considerably less raucous. The film’s final fade-out ranks among the most emotional moments in the Christmas canon -- certainly no small feat.

This is a brilliant and beautiful production - I have an old VHS copy, but would love to find an AFFORDABLE DVD version. Anyone?

This film is one of the best Christmas programs my husband and I have ever seen. We happened to rent it many years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Sadly, as years passed, the only place we could find it was at our local library. Every year we'd be on a waiting list to borrow a well-worn VHS copy. We're so happy that it is now available for purchase! A Child's Christmas in Wales has something that everyone can relate to-bustling ladies in the kitchen, sleepy uncles by the fire, a tipsy aunt, carols and a beautiful final scene, complete with a loving grandfather and snow. A keeper!

This is a faithful adaptation of the Dylan Thomas classic. I watch this nearly every Christmas and never tire of the poetry and nostalgia. An excellent production, not to be missed!

This is one of my favorite holiday videos. Mr. Elliot's narration is a feast in itself.
