Overview

A Christmas Story

Nine years after the Yuletide slasher flick Black Christmas, Porky's director Bob Clark once again took on the holiday genre, switching from gasps to laughs with A Christmas Story. Adapted from a memoir by humorist Jean Shepherd (who narrates), the film centers on Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley), a young boy living in 1940s Indiana, desperately yearning for a Red Rider BB gun for Christmas. Despite protests from his mother (Melinda Dillon) that he'll shoot his eye out, Ralphie persists, unsuccessfully trying to enlist the assistance of both his teacher and Santa Claus. All the while, Ralphie finds himself dealing with the constant taunts of a pair of bullies and trying to not get in the middle of a feud between his mother and father (Darren McGavin) regarding a sexy lamp.

This is my favorite Christmas Movie. However, be warned. If you're thinking of buying the 2-disc 20th anniversary edition because you want a widescreen version of this movie then don't buy it. The ¿widescreen version¿ is actually a cut down version of the already cut down ¿standard version¿ of the movie. So, if you watch this disc's ¿widescreen version¿ you'll see even less of the movie. Just buy the cheeper DVD and save $'s.

A classic that's fun all year round. Few films hold up as well as this one. It's hilarious every time you see it. Warm, funny, cute, sweet and entertaining to watch any time of the year. This special edition is great, there are a ton of well produced extras that fans will love.

Love It! Love it! Love It! This is a great movie. Not the best for younger children ( because of swearing). I love " Ohhhhhhh Fuuuuddddgggggeee"! Lol.

This is one of my favorite movies and undoubtedly my absolute favorite Christmas movie. Like so many others, it has become a family tradition to sit around on Christmas Eve/Day to watch a 24 hour 'A Christmas Story.' Our family also knows it line for line... we love to do the little moan that Randy does when he won't eat his dinner! That stays with us all year. I've only seen the video, but this year mom and dad are getting a DVD player (SHH!!! don't tell them! :). I think it's only appropriate that I get 'A Christmas Story' on DVD. I'm looking forward to watching the DVD version. If you don't come away from this movie feeling a little warmer after basking in the 40's Christmas nostalgia, I really feel a little bad for you.

This movie kind of cements what Christmas is really about to a kid. If you want a movie that helps you feel like a kid again then this is the one!

Although a Southerner never having had to deal with the snow situations depicted, I could totally relate to the bullying, Christmas gifts from well-intentioned relatives, and ruined holiday meals, and found it hilarious to watch. My husband, who is from up north, totally enjoyed watching this movie. He has dealt with bundling up for cold weather and tongues freezing on metal. And of course the main storyline so many children have faced: How to get Santa to bring the highly desired toy on Christmas day. The narration in the first person, as the main character tells his story, is uniquely related. It's a family classic for us to watch every Christmas season.

In 1983 I was in high school and went to the movies. The movie I went to see was sold out and I had to go to A Christmas Story. By the title I thought it would be a waste of time but oh how wrong I was! My friends and I laughed until we rolled in the aisle! When I first got married my husband scoffed but now he's hooked too! My kids are finally old enough to watch it...they hate Scott Farcus too! You just gotta love the dad's ''major award'' and how the mom gets rid of it! BUY THIS MOVIE...you won't be sorry!

I have seen this movie no less than 20 times and I love it just the same each time. It is one that I will have memorized and still enjoy. Lots of humor and ''real life'' in it....stuff you can relate to. Wonderful...I am buying it today.

This IS the greatest Christmas movie of all time. I have been watching this movie every Christmas (and sometimes year-round) since I was a child, and I just don't get sick of it. My family and I can recite the entire movie by heart- and it's the only thing we will ALL agree on watching before going to bed on Christmas Eve. And evey year we wonder out loud whether or not Ralphie will get the coveted Red Ryder BB Gun on Christmas morning...

As a kid, I lay in bed at night listening to Jean Shepard's radio show, where he told stories of his youth. ''A Christmas Story'' is like a video of those nights. He's a master storyteller and this movie raises the bar several notches. Some of the lines are priceless and have become classics that people use in conversation - I double dog dare you to refute that!

This movie means so much to me, I have to watch it every Christmas. Randy cracks me up; I think about him under the kitchen cabinet when he says ''Daddy's gonna kill Ralphie''. The classic movie really touches everyone that watches. Ralphie is like many young boys at Christmas that long for that forbidden BB Gun to be under the X-mas tree. This is absolutely my favorite Christmas movie. My twin brother and I have been watching it for the last 20 years!! We love to repeat ''Ralphie, don't leave me, don't leave me'' from the unforgettable triple dog dare ya scene. Watch it!!!!!!

This movie is sooooo funny! I love it. It is a tradition in our family to make sure we watch it a thousand times every Christmas. Now that I have my own family I have passed it down to them and they absolutely love it. Ralphie's imagination, sneakiness, and lies are what we can all relate to. Just the way he and his friends are, the things they say and do are hilarious. Definetly a fun movie to watch!

I saw this movie at the theater in its original release in December, 1983. Ever since then it has been my favorite Christmas movie and one of my top five favorite movies of all genres. It's a simple tale, and the way it draws you back to the 1940's, and to childhood is classic. I have the VHS but am buying the DVD for all of the extras, including the additional narratives from Jean Shepherd. If you like the Christmas season, you'll love this movie!
