Overview

A Wink and a Smile

Ten burlesque newcomers shed their inhibitions, emotional hang-ups, stereotypes, and, of course, clothing as they enter the Academy of Burlesque for a personal training session with famed Seattle dancer Miss Indigo Blue. By the time this lesson is over, these ladies will have gained the confidence to strut across the stage in true style, all the while knowing that every eye in the room is completely fixed on them.

Timmons' A Wink and A Smile is a guide to the art of Burlesque. It is a profile of a class of students learning the art and defining their characters, but is also a history of the art form, and includes wonderful performances by some of today's best performers. Many people have also been introduced to burlesque by Dita Von Teese and are unaware of the many troupes and styles that have sprung up nationwide. This film shows why people get into burlesque and what it does for them. In addition it shows burlesque and boyesque in action. Personally, the film revived my interest in the art form and started me going to see it again. Anyone who has a passing interest in burlesque should see this film and recommend it to all their friends.
