Southern plantation owners wanted to obtain as many slaves as they could to plant and harvest their cotton, rice, indigo, and tobacco. Their economic interests put them at odds with the North where many white workers opposed being forced to compete for work with slaves. Given the fact that America was founded upon the principle that all people were created equal, the institution of slavery was destined for demise at a future date. This program reviews the slavery and other issues that proved so divisive between the North and South and ultimately led to the costly Civil War.
