American Experience: the Fall of Saigon

American Experience: the Fall of Saigon

The date was April 29, 1975, and American ground troops had been struggling to gain a foothold in Vietnam for a decade. Despite the declaration of a cease-fire, two-years prior, the fighting raged on and the North Vietnamese communists shocked the world by overthrowing the South Vietnamese government in Saigon. In this release of three episodes originally broadcast in 1983 as part of WGBH Television's Vietnam: A Television History series, filmmakers take a closer look at America's final two years in Vietnam and utilize archival footage, interviews with North Vietnamese officers, and an exclusive interview with Henry Kissinger to highlight the desperation that preceded the fall of Saigon and the subsequent evacuation of the U.S. military.
