Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
With madcap antics to delight youngsters and Hollywood in-jokes to tickle adults, Animaniacs is a nonstop thrill ride designed to leave viewers breathless with laughter. Created in the 1930s -- but considered too outrageous to be unleashed back then -- Warner brothers Yakko (Rob Paulsen) and Wakko (Jess Harnell) and their sister Dot (Tress MacNeille) are the most chronically impatient characters ever unleashed from Termite Terrace. Even the most encyclopedic of film buffs will require repeat viewings to catch all the film references in Disc 5’s "Video Review," a throwback to classic Warner Bros. blackout-gag cartoons such as Robert Clampett's 1946 "Book Revue." Children will relate to Wakko's desperate "Potty Emergency," just as they will surely be baffled by a parody of Casablanca and references to Jack Benny, George Burns, Milton Berle, and Algonquin Round Table wit Robert Benchley. One "very special" episode wreaks even more havoc than usual by mixing and mismatching the Animaniacs ensemble. One cartoon pairs gene-spliced genius lab mouse Brain with the overly affectionate Mindy, while another teams Yakko and Wakko with the cranky, purse-wielding Slappy. Two educational patter songs, an Animaniacs specialty, are devoted to the planets (including Pluto) and the senses. Another highlight is one of Pinky and the Brain's best cartoons, "Bubba Bo Bob Brain," in which Brain transforms himself into a country-and-western sensation in yet another failed bid to take over the world (his talk-show encounter with a caricatured Dolly Parton is classic). Perhaps the greatest appreciation of this collection will come from those who grew up watching Animaniacs. They'll be amazed at what they missed and what the writers were able to get away with in a so-called children's show.
