The movie was great. It was so intense and it realy does take you for a ride. Mel Gibson takes his time with the movies he makes and always does an outstanding job regardless of his personal issues which people try to hold against him. He is definitely on top of his game. This is a DVD that you buy and take out everytime someone visits that hasnt seen it. Excellent, excellent film.

I wasn't able to view this in the theatres but was determined to purchase it....I'm glad I did. This is one of MG's best movies yet. At times I felt like Jaguar Paw....determined to save my loved ones. It's heartwarming and gets you in the gut. Survival is everything.

Maybe this will read as more of a response than a review, but I think it is unfair to call this movie racist. This was a work of fiction set in the time period of the height of the Mayan Empire, historical inaccuracies and all. But I don't think anyone would dispute the "signs of the times" in that point of history, where human sacrifice was real and power thru religion held dominance over a civilization. Every civilization rises and falls, makes mistakes (minor or serious) along the way, the United States and other present nations included among them. This is a movie that conveys those errors at the basic human level, exactly where it has the most impact. It's hardly exploitation to point out mistakes: it's an essential part of understanding history. I do agree that people should dig deeper in cultures, but for what it's worth, the movie was entertaining and helped me reflect a little more on human nature, good and bad. BTW, wars begin at the conference tables of our leaders, not the in the foxholes of our soldiers.

Far exceedingly the bloodiest film I have ever purveyed before with such savagery that nothing could possibly shock me now, or could it? Set in the crumbling days of the Mayan Empire, there is a texture and an analogous story for our age that is far deeper than any in the other Gibson canon.

This was an amazing movie! It's well worth 2 THUMBS UP! I only wish that they would have made a sequel to this film with what happened to Rudy Youngblood and his family, along with the landing of the Spanish. This movie was packed with action, romance and adventure. It's a must have in your movie collection. The movie is like another The Last of the Mohicans film. Basically Rudy Youngblood was captured and condemned to be sacrificed but the love for his wife and children was too great to break his spirit. He fought his way back to them with brutal hardships of being recaptured.

Apocalypto was awesome. It was very interesting, funny, fast paced, and at times sad. The movie has a very good plot and take off. One that most will enjoy.

speaking in their native tongue. I am not an expert on MAYAN culture per se but have seen Discovery Channel et al and had a feel for the quality of life these people must have had. Mel adds personality and drama to the cold historical facts in regard to the MAYA in a way that brought the plight of the Scots under English rule to life in Braveheart. I thougt the casting was right on........the handsome, brave hero and the very ugly, very cruel villain. The story line was very reflective of the times and the reason war was waged by these people. The objective was even more frightening than what we are fighting for today. The story had enough suspense to keep you interested and enough pathos to root for the home team throughout! The ending was profound in its subtleness and I found myself pondering this fact long after the movie ended. A really great movie about a great people that all but vanished overnight.

Viewing APOCALYPTO is a visual and visceral experience: some of the most beautiful cinematic depictions of skies, jungles, raging rivers and extraordinary recreations of Mayan temples and peoples fill the screen for a very long two and a half hours. The images include excessive violence (beheadings, punjee stake traps, genocidal type destruction of a village of people, brutalized slaves, etc) and concentrate more on chases than on drama. But the effect presented is richly colorful and imaginative. There is little story to tell. A quiet and fearless tribe spends its time hunting, teasing a fellow tribesman about his infertility and making him the brunt of cruel jokes - just the ordinary camaraderie we are led to believe - until our main character Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood) hears a shudder in the jungle that results in his tribe being overtaken by a more aggressive, human sacrificing tribe. The village is burned, Jaguar Paw manages to hide his pregnant wife and child in a well, and he and the remaining villagers are taken into slavery and marched to the Mayan capital where they are sacrificed by Mayan priests to appease the gods to save their crumbling empire. A sun eclipse saves Jaguar Paw, he escapes, and after an interminable chase through the jungle reunites with his wife and children just as the Spanish conquistadors sail into harbor. The cast responds well to the direction of Mel Gibson. Outstanding among them are of course Rudy Youngblood, Dalia Hernández, Jonathan Brewer, Morris Birdyellowhead, María Isabel Díaz, Espiridion Acosta Cache, Raoul Trujillo and Rodolfo Palacias among others. But nearly as much credit goes to the costumer and hairpiece design (Mayes C. Rubeo) and to the set builders (Jay Aroesty) of the Mayan Temples. Visually the movie is stunning though in a graphically gross sort of way. The problem lies with the lack of significant information about the fall of the Mayan Empire, one of the more advanced civilizations known: Gibson would have us see only the brutal savagery of a highly sophisticated body of people. A sad depiction of a great nation. Grady Harp

Mel Gibson is a true artist. Everything about the work is true quality - from the casting to the props. The movie pulls you into its fast paced visual action sans a lot of boring dialogue - what the medium is made for (think of Deadwood with all its mindless talk). As a Native American Tribal member, I say it's the best movie yet depicting the beauty, power and compassion of our people!

Well it goes without saying...this was destined to be an excellent movie from the time the ink was dry on the script. Gibson has some excellent notches on his directorial belt so you should expect nothing less than a premium and emotional experience when reviewing one of his films. This is no exception and may be his most well made film to date not to mention, MG doesn't exactly spare expense on his movies. While some, especially those with related ancestory, may find something to pick apart and complain about because of some historical inaccuracies....let me remind you this type of film is not meant to be 100% historically accurate. Those are called documentaries and really don't have much success on the big screen. Try the discovery channel. In fact if one of the most well known actors/directors took the time and expense to dig a story, that included my lineage, out of dusty old history books and make a movie about it...I would probably feel honored. Is this movie overdone in some repects? Is it exagerated here and there? I invite you to name a major movie, based on actual events that has not been. Entertainment value for Apocalypto is top notch, it's easy to follow and it keeps you interested for the duration of the film. Anything is worth watching one time, this movie is worth owning for repeated viewing so go ahead and order a copy and prepare to be entertained.

First of all, this movie is made for a Big Screen. The main reason for a big screen is the subtitles. But, the scenes are stunning when watched on a big screen. The plot is great. This movie is so exciting it can give you a heart attack. I hadn't seen this movie since it was at the theater. But, I recently finished reading "The River of Doubt." The book reminded me of this movie in some way so I rented it and watched it again. If you haven't seen this movie, first of all, buy a big high def TV if you don't already have one. Then, buy this movie and you will be clutching on to your seat.

This movie was amazing in every way from the cinematography, to the overwhelmingly touching and emotionally engaging plot. The idea of unyielding progress that threatens your very way of life and world changing events is truely thrust at you here. I've heard some say that the movie was too violent and portreyed the Mayan people as too uncivilized and brutal. This is a fictional account made to intensify emotions and give you a lesson in an in your face way. Historically, it might not be 100% accurate, but human sacrifice and things of that nature DID happen and happened a lot in the last of the Mayan's days on top. Every tendancy a character has in this movie is based on his ideas of peace, war, religion and fear, so maybe these scenes were integral to the story. Take it at face value instead of jumping on the "talk smack" about Mel Gibson bandwagon. Don't think there's a hidden agenda in this or The Passion. Just needed a villian and you sure as hell get one with the misguided Mayans.
