This essential video has 16 clips of early jazz from the 1925-1933 period, most of which were previously unavailable. The highlights include the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1930 playing "Old Man Blues"; the Boswell Sisters in wonderful form on a 1931 rendition of "Heebie Jeebies"; the full 1933 clip of Louis Armstrong in Europe performing "I Cover the Waterfront," "Dinah," and "Tiger Rag"; a long excerpt from Bessie Smith's lone film, St. Louis Blues; the superior 1928 dance band of Tommy Christian playing two songs; and Ben Bernie (in an extremely rare sound film from 1925) in hot form on "Sweet Georgia Brown." The most notable discovery, a newsreel excerpt that finds Bix Beiderbecke playing "My Ohio Home" with Paul Whiteman, is a bit of a disappointment since Bix does not solo, but it is fascinating to watch. Other performers include the Dorsey Brothers (a brief but colorful song from 1929), Bill Robinson, Duke Ellington's band from 1929's "Black and Tan," and a few lesser singers and dancers. Overall, this video is a real collector's item; very highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
