I've read the complete poem and I know my history. While this movie isn't accurate to the poem (at all), there are a lot of hidden jokes for the history geeks and it's a new spin on an old and christianized tale (one of the big jokes throughout the movie). It was a lot of fun.

Thirteenth Warrior was a better version of Beowolf than this movie. Like I said, this is not of Butlers best movies.

Don't watch this movie if you have any expectation of it being like the Old English poem that we all know and love. The director killed the story when he decided to take the non-violent route. HELLO?! "Beowulf" is supposed to be violent! (And I know that there are still gruesome images in the movie, but he took too much creative liberty by changing the story the way he did.) It's twisted around so that we're supposed to feel sorry for the Grendel. The notion of what "hero" means is called into question. (HINT: Don't expect Beowulf to be heroic in the way you remembered him to be in the poem.) I'll not spoil it for those of you who are willing to waste your time watching the movie. Don't say I didn't warn you!
