I watched this religiously in the 90's and with all the other TV shows on DVD, I wondered if they would ever release these on DVD. I look forward to always having these on DVD to relive those good ole days.

When this show premiered, it was groundbreaking. It dealt with issues that had rarely been talked about out in the open, never mind being on a television show. In the first season alone there is a drug-addicted mother, a multiple date rape, a teen drinking binge, and an AIDS character brought to life. It was hard-hitting and talked about issues that needed to brought into the light, yet were very much taboo for the time.
There were a couple of problems, however. The first one was the way that they portrayed these very real and serious issues. Granted, I watched these episodes with a group of girls and it was years later than the actual show was on the air (18 to be exact). It does not excuse it, however. Things like date rape and AIDS should never be exploited in the way that it was on this show.
A perfect example was the date rape episode. In this, Brenda tries to help a girl who calls into a teen hotline to get advice on the fact that she has been date raped multiple times. I don¿t have an issue with this, because it is a very real thing that people need to be aware that happens, but I did have an issue with the way that it finally was portrayed. Instead of this girl and her problems becoming the focus, Brenda is the main plot line, with her whines and yearning to seek the truth. It became comical to the group that I was watching it with, and this should have never happened. No humor should ever be found in any of these topics, yet it happened time and time again.
The other issue I had with this was the fact that the whole show was sometimes highly inappropriate for the targeted audience in which it was intended when it first aired. This was geared towards preteen and teenage girls. This age group does not need to get ideas that sleeping with a man almost ten years older than you is okay and that parties with underage drinking and drugs are the popular way to go. Even though Brenda and Brandon have a somewhat stable home life compared to many of their friends, their mother still contemplates an affair in the first season. This is not the type of messages that need to be brought into the homes of American families.
Beverly Hills 90210 has great twists and turns and is never lacking in plot intrigue. What it is lacking in, however, is morals and values that people need to embrace, not dismiss. The fact remains that even though this was the show that led to things such as Gossip Girls and The OC, it is not acceptable to condone such things. Though it is fictional, it is leaning more towards the reality that is American youth and that is not a good thing. We all need to have a little less Beverly Hills and a little more morals.
