I originally caught an episode of this on Comedy Central quite a few years ago. I am so glad that it made it's way to the States. Dylan Moran and Bill Bailey are very talented. Too bad there are only six episodes on the disc. And while they warrent several viewing each, I can't wait for season 2.

This might be a biased review as I generally tend to appreciate British comedy more so than American. They're always ruder, edgier and wittier. (Case in point: Coupling, while sharing the same premise as Friends is by far the superior show.)

Black Books is about Bernard Black the owner of a book shop. Sounds simple, right? Throw in weird bff Fran who owns the new-age shop next door where she sells "a lot of s***e" as she puts it, a bumbling long haired assistant named Manny and the fact that Bernard is a raging alcoholic who happens to hate every other human on the planet. (Ah, a man after my own heart.)

Bernard drinks on the job, yells at his would-be customers and treats Manny (and just about everyone) horribly. The only way a character like this could get away with it is that he does all of this while being hilarious at the same time. A favorite episode of mine deals with Bernard and Manny house-sitting for a friend. A friend with a huge wine cellar. The episode turns into a surreal spoof of Frankenstein and includes a counter in a top corner of the screen noting how many Pounds the two have wasted (or gotten wasted on to be more specific). Surreal with a biting sharp wit, this DVD is well worth the simple price. Unfortunately, the majority of fans (including myself) state that the episodes in Season 2 and 3, while still funny, do not live up to the ridiculously high standard set by this amazing first season. So just go buy it already!
