Blue Oyster Cult: Live '76

Live 1976 starts out as a "had to be there" kind of thing, but this is Blue Öyster Cult at the peak of their powers and popularity, and soon becomes a barnburner. At first glance, the song list could dig a bit deeper, but this DVD still gives a great sampling of the first four cult classics. Like most '70s giants, BOC made their living on the road, as demonstrated by the tightness and facility with which they kick out the jams. Plus, "Buck's Boogie" shoots out a typically excessive axe showoff, replete with Al Bouchard's legendary laser drum solo. This version of the BOC calling card, "Don't Fear the Reaper," still appears on numerous classic rock video channels (or late-night compilation ads). Eric Bloom's got his Jeff Lynne look perfected, along with a keen jumpsuit and goofy patter and moves. The spooky "Astronomy," the five guitar rave-up in {"&This Ain't the Summer of Love," and the duck walk for "Born to Be Wild" are other highlights. The production values are actually fine considering the period. Besides, this band doesn't have many fans who aren't fanatics, and cult completists will definitely be satisfied.BOC stars in a live performance. See hits including "Stairway to the Stars," "Born to be Wild" and many more.
