Bob Geldof and his band of scruffy but impassioned Irish rockers the Boomtown Rats were riding high on the British charts when this live video was recorded during a sold-out London show in 1978, and years later the material has been given a quality presentation on DVD. The Boomtown Rats: Live at Hammersmith Odeon 1978 is presented partly in the full-screen aspect ratio of 1.33:1 (in which it was originally shot) and partly cropped at 1.78:1, primarily in the sections showing off flashy editing and visual tricks which speak amusingly of the vintage of the performance. The source materials have been well cared for, and the material looks and sounds great. The audio has mastered in three formats: Dolby Digital Stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, and DTS Surround. The performances are in English, with no multiple language options or subtitles. Bonus materials include three audio-only performances from the same concert and two music videos from Bob Geldof's 2001 solo album, Sex, Age & Death. Fans who remember the tough, nervy rock of the Boomtown Rats will doubtless be pleased with this release, which captures their sound and attitude with remarkable clarity.
