Overview

Cannibalism: Extreme Survival

Cannibalism, or the devouring of human flesh, represents one of the few moral infractions common to most cultures in the world - a strong enough infraction that most homo sapiens consider it not simply repugnant but unthinkable. But in certain situations, both under duress and out of desperation, individuals have found themselves driven to this ghastly act. The History Chennel documentary Cannibalism: Extreme Survival investigates several of these instances - a case in which four British sailors became stranded at sea after their yacht capsized, a nightmarish instance of cannibalism that erupted on the Sarah Island penal colony in 1820s Tasmania, and finally, the grisly fate that befell some Japanese military men in New Guinea during World War II. In recounting these stories, the program draws on rare archival footage and incisive historical commentary.
