Capricorn One

Peter Hyams' paranoid thriller Capricorn One comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include production notes, cast and crew information, and theatrical trailers. This is a very strong disc as well as a perfect example of '70s paranoia. This disc provides good picture and sound while offering an old-fashioned, entertaining film.

This is a good movie about the USA government attempting to hoax the world with a staged manned space flight to Mars. The film keeps us in our seats with moving action and suspense as the three astronauts attempt to escape their captors and reveal to the world what was really going on.

There are so many things wrong with this film, I countinued watching out of inertia. That doesn't mean this is a great awful movie that's fun to watch;it is not, its just bad. The plot is absolutely ludicrous, as is its unfolding on the screen. There are continuity problems you could fly a 747 through. Save for a Telly Savalas section involving a biplane, this "sci-fi" movie is as entertaing as reading the transcript of congressional hearing on the dangers of watching lead paint dry. The positives: Elliot Gould, Telly Savalas, Jerry goldsmiths score, But these are Slim Pickins in a two hour movie.
