Case 39 undeservingly was dumped into the theaters last October with horrible word-of-mouth and with a pitifully weak advertising campaign. It's release date was shifted more than a handful of times over a few years and after seeing the finished product, I cannot fathom why. I highly recommend watching the trailer before the movie and before reading any detailed reviews. Unfortunately, the US seemed to be the last place this movie premiered and by then, internet bloggers spoiled the mystery and ruined the preview's setup. On paper, the movie's premise seems generic but the approach is very original thanks to the screenwriter Ray Wright and director Christian Alvart . An altruistic social worker(Renee Zellweger)reaches out to a troubled youth(Jodelle Ferland)whom may or may not be evil. I don't want to say anymore about the plot, mostly because I'd give away the fates of some characters. While I didn't think the movie was scary-I didn't think similar movies like The Exorcist or The Ring are scary either-but the movie never lost my attention and I was entertained. I was surprised by the dvd's supplements, considering the movie didn't perform very well at the box office- a few documentaries, mostly fluff, and over 10 deleted scenes and alternate ending- I'm glad it stayed an alternate. One final thought: I think most critics unfairly marginalzed Case 39 because of it's shifting release date-usually a sign of trouble- and also due to it's lead actress's last four movies. While I didn't enjoy any of her films in the last five years, except Case, I've always thought Renee Zellweger is one of the best in her profession and I hope she picks more films like this in the future.
