Overview

Cavalry Charge

Paramount's immensely successful Pine-Thomas production unit once more struck box-office gold with The Last Outpost. Ronald Reagan stars as devil-may-care Confederate officer Vance Britton, who leads a band of guerillas on a series of sabotage raids. The Northern Army dispatches Vance's brother, Union officer Jeb Britton (Bruce Bennett), to put an end to Vance's activities. Both brothers are forced to work shoulder to shoulder when a Northern attempt to enlist the aid of the Apache tribe backfires, sparking an all-out Indian war. Rhonda Fleming, who seemed to spend her entire career in Technicolor adventure flicks, appears as the romantic bone of contention between the battling Brittons. Halfway down the cast list as Lieutenant Fenton is TV's future "Ward Cleaver", Hugh Beaumont.

''Cavalry Charge'' is the most politically-incorrect movie I've ever seen. And it is truly beautiful, just because of that. President Reagan plays a shallow part. The movie itself is shallow. But there is nothing like the scene where President Reagan comes thundering to the rescue of...of...while flying the Flag of.... (-Well, I'll just leave it to your imagination.) That scene alone is worth six-times the price. It's just a shame that I can't personally deliver copies of this film to Nancy Pelosi, Al Gore, Jesse Jackson, and the editorial staff at The New York Times. I say it's President Ronald W. Reagan at his FINEST! (Or worst... depending on how you voted in 2000)He picked a side, and stood by his convictions. President Reagan here is a young ''B-Actor'', but brings the stupid screenwriting to life. He makes a choice, and sticks with it. Right or wrong, he stays with his convictions. Despite what the pundits say. (Sound familiar?) Buy this movie---whether you're a Strom Thurman Republican...or a Ted Kennedy Democrat. The sheer kitsch will make it worthwhile.
