Phil Rosen's The Scarlet Clue (1944) starring Sidney Toler as Charlie Chan, originally produced by Monogram Pictures, has been issued in a very nice looking DVD edition by MGM/UA. The full-screen (1.33:1) image is filled with rich contrasts and lots of detail, even in the dark, fog-shrouded opening scenes, and the sound is clean and sharp even if mastered at a slightly low volume level. Curiously enough, MGM has used a British print (credited to Anglo-Amalgamated Pictures) as the source for the disc, an indication that no suitable U.S. print survives. The 65-minute movie has been given a very generous 16 chapters, all accessible through a simple two-layer menu. There is no trailer or any other bonus features, and the disc opens automatically to a simple two-layer menu.
