Clannad and especially Clannad: After Story are some of the highest rated anime's of all time to start with. If you are a fan of anime even in the slightest, and more importantly enjoy a solid story, impeccable character development and beautiful music, this is your one stop shop. Something to keep in mind is that this series is in two parts, the School Life (Clannad) and the Clannad: After Story. After story continues the story after high school for the main characters, with a heightened focus on the main two, Tomoya and Nagisa. First the main points of interest - a)Romance - This being the School Life part of the story, the romance is much less than in after story. It is still the main story, but it is slowly developed during the entire series, a continuous thread despite the divergent story arcs. b)Humor - No anime can be worth of the name without a little off the wall humor, but it is kept on a fairly tight leash in this series. Though not so much here as it is in the After Story. Plenty of laughs to be had, but the majority of the feeling is kept lighthearted and hopeful. c)Story - Clannad and After Story are someone unique to the anime world in that its origins lay in a visual novel (a kind of choose your own adventure style video game) as opposed to a manga. In general this means that the overall plot is much richer than most. Also, while the series can be divided into several story arcs, there is a main plot that is developed throughout, and expanded upon once you start After Story. d)Art - Clannad carries with it a very "fresh" visual style, only natural as it was created only a few years ago. My only real complaint about the series was that to begin with it was a bit difficult to tell the girls apart due to the mirror like appearances apart from hair and eye color. A very minor argument that dissipated quite quickly. e)Music - Clannad and After story both have the same basic sound track, the majority of it ported directly over from the visual novel it originated from. This is not a point against it however, as it has some of the most moving tracks I have ever heard anywhere, never mind an anime series. Still interested? Great there's more! Literally. As mentioned, once you finish with Clannad here, theres still Clannad: After Story to see! This is a rare treat in the anime world, as the majority of them would simply end with the last episode we see here. Due to its visual novel background however, we get even more! As good as Clannad is, After Story is even better, and is an absolute must see once you have finished here. Also of note is that again due to its visual novel background, there are a few "alternate ending" episodes, one here with Tomoyo, and another in the Clannad: After Story series with Kyou. These do not take place within the main story at all, and are just some fun (if emotional) extra bits.
