Beginning in February 1989 as a midseason replacement, the series that focused on a university football coach and his wacky colleagues went on to an amazing nine seasons for ABC. Craig T. Nelson stars as Coach Hayden Fox of the Minnesota State University Screaming Eagles, a winning team despite the behind-the-scenes antics of assistant coaches Luther Van Dam (Jerry Van Dyke) and Dauber Dybinski (Bill Fagerbakke, the voice of Patrick in the animated series SpongeBob Squarepants). Fox is a dedicated coach who is obsessed with his team and with football in general, much to the chagrin of his girlfriend, Christine Armstrong (Shelly Fabares). Although much of the series revolves around the harebrained situations Luther and Dauber get themselves into (such as when Luther bets against the Eagles -- and wins), many funny moments arise from the common disagreement between men and women about sports. Hayden's daughter, Kelly (Clare Carey), figures prominently in Season 1's 13 episodes; her role became deemphasized in later seasons. Included as extra features on the set are a featurette on the greatest '80s TV shows, along with a bonus Coach episode from Season 2, "Homewreckers."
