THIS FILM STARTS OFF A LITTLE LIKE "THE TIN DRUM" AND "ORGE," BUT THIS IS NOT BY THAT DIRECTOR. THE FIRST TWO ACTS ARE SLOW AND MISMANAGED TO MAKE THE VIEWING EXPERIENCE DULL TO THE EMOTIONS THE SCENES PORTRAY. THE FILM DOESN'T TAKE OFF ANYMORE WHEN SIE GERMANS COME. YOU COME AND SEE ALL THE NEGATIVES TO WAR AND HUMANITY AND YOU JUST WATCH IT THINKING THIS IS BAD, BUT THIS SUPPOSED TO BE A MOVIE. HOWEVER, THE FILM HAS ITS POCKETS OF GOOD CINEMA.

After reading the reviews of this film, I was disappointed after watching it. It's too long, in places poorly filmed, has an annoying sound track and is full of Soviet-era cliches. The movie shows the enormity and brutality of the Nazis, but casts the theme in a good vs. evil clash: The Nazis are very evil, but the Russians were morally superior. In truth, both sides fought without morals in the total war that was waged on the Eastern Front.

The production of this film was prohibited and the showing banned during 10 years prior to its release in 1985. If it wasn't for the liberation in Poland, Gorbatchev's "glasnost" and "perestroyka" this movie wouldn't been shown in the USSR. The filme shows the misery and lack of power of the Soviet-glorified fighters against the Nazies, the human side of the war, not the political (of course communist propaganda) one. Very moving, very human and extremely truthful.

I first saw this film four years ago, and have used it in my classes on Soviet film and WW II ever since. The film is not a splatterfest, so if you want a lot of special effects and dog's blood cartridges, this is not for you. The students have found it to be deeply moving and disquieting, far more than anything that has graced American screens in the past several decades. If you want to see an attempt by late Soviet (it was released in 1985) filmmakers to come to terms with the Great Patriotic War and its tremendous cost in civilian Soviet lives, I strongly recommend this film.

This movie is absolutely intense. It is horrifying and shocking in it's portrayal of war, and the cinematography and acting are absolutely unrivaled by any other film, anywhere, ever. the main character, florya, literally ages before your eyes as he is exposed to the savageries of war. beware, many of the scenes are so disturbing they may cause nightmares. This movie makes typical war movies like stalingrad or cross of iron look like disney cartoons.
