CQ, Roman Coppola's quirky and curious movie-within-a-movie, comes to DVD, and despite it being a box-office disappointment, receives the special edition treatment from MGM. The image, which includes both 1.85:1 anamorphic and full-frame transfers, displays nice colors and generally sharp detail. While certainly not a reference-quality transfer, the picture is still well presented. The sound, a 5.1 Dolby Digital track, is sufficient for this film, and while never fully taking advantage of the entire sound field, it still comes across with just the right amount of Surround and balance. The real surprise would be the number of supplements added. Coppola and director of photography Robert Yeoman provide a scene-specific commentary that is relatively low key, but still informative. The second side of the disc contains all the other extras, and there are quite a few of them, including numerous featurettes on the acting, sound, and design, among other things. Each is rather short and to the point. Also included are four behind-the-scenes featurettes from other filmmakers that tend to go on too long. They are disorganized for the most part, without any real focus. In addition to the standard theatrical trailer, this disc has a photo gallery of 75 behind-the-scene shots, and concert performances by the group Mellow for two of the songs used in the soundtrack of the film; a smart inclusion are the "Dragonfly" films in their entirety (each around 15 minutes) from the two directors in the film. Finally, numerous "easter eggs" can be found on the second-side menu, by clicking on the movie artwork, though each is only seconds long. Though no one saw this film in the theaters, now is their chance, though this unusual film will probably only appeal to a limited audience.
