Irresistible characters, a stellar cast, and the non-stop liveliness of a 19th-century English country market town capture your heart in this brilliant mini-series based on three novels by Elizabeth Gaskell. Dame Judi Dench stars as kind-hearted Miss Matty Jenkyns -- the younger sister of Cranford's severe moral guardian, Deborah (Dame Eileen Atkins). Share dramatic ups and downs during an exciting year in the life of the town, as Matty meets her long-lost first love (Sir Michael Gambon), a handsome young doctor makes many hearts beat faster, and alarming rumors of a new railway line prove true. Lushly filmed with period costumes in beautiful historic settings, Cranford was originally aired in the fall of 2007 on BBC 1, and aired in the U.S. on PBS's Masterpiece Classic.

Cranford has quickly become one of my favorite movies of all time. I first saw it on Masterpiece Theater with my husband and we both loved it, so I purchased it. Then we watched it again with our two teenage sons and 11 year old daughter. They all loved it too. It has everything drama, humor and a little romance. The ladies of the town of Cranford are hysterically funny, charming, and charitable as they try to come to grips with the changing times. This movie is for the whole family, and will have you wanting to move to Cranford.

This was such a good program! I watched it with my mom, and we both loved it. The story is engrossing, and it really throws you into the lives of the characters, and has you rooting for them almost immediately. It is a bit long, but it needs to be to get all the information across. I recommended Pride and Prejudice, the 2005 version, first because it is a great adaptation of a great story, and second because you will recognize a couple of the actors from Cranford in it (Simon Woods, Judi Dench, Claudie Blakley).

Period dramas are what, some may argue, the BBC does best. And Cranford seems to hold that argument up. It's beautifully filmed with a fantastic cast that fits each character perfectly. They're not all the biggest names, but they don't have to be. The best of the best being Philip Glenister as Mr. Carter, and Judi Dench as Matty Jenkins. This adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's books has really a lot for a wide range of people. There's comedy, drama, romance, suffering, heart wrenching sadness, and even some social commentary throw in there. Buy this, watch this, and if you like it be sure to pick up the BBC versions of Elizabeth Gaskell's other works Wives and Daughters, and North and South.

This is an excellent production, especially if you are a BBC fan. It has an outstanding cast with the likes of Judi Dench, Eileen Atkins, Francesca Annis, Julia McKensie and Imelda Staunton. This is a "classic". It has everything; humor, drama, romance, excellent performances. The special features are a real treat too! Get to know how and where it was filmed, the production process, and some intereting insights about the author, Elizabeth Gaskell. I've watched it repeatedly and never tire of it. Meet some extraordinary women in Cranford!

I just watched this wonderful series as I do every year and I loved it all over again. Elizabeth Gaskell's story of life in small-town England in the 1840's is layered with the most engaging, unforgettable characters. More than a period drama, this is a story of being human and sharing what these characters feel and experience...regret, loneliness, jealousy, sorrow, friendship, joy,'s all there in Cranford!

Cranford shows the various lifestyles of early Industrial Revolution England. While manor life is reflective of pre-revolutionary France the charm of "village" England is the focus. The view of the aristocracy clashes with those of modern education and the role of women, both in business and society is evident throughout. The changing of societal norms as well as the fear of change, that is on the horizon, run this community. Beside the social commentary I find that I just sink into the comfort of it. It brings the joy of more than a simple time but points out that relationships are most important. The love of family, neighbors, and friends makes this a feast for the emotions. You know that no matter how the modern world may change, these people will always live, love, and commune with each other.

This series is a joy to watch. I've listened to and read Elizabeth Gaskell's books, and I totally admire the way Masterpiece Theatre brings them to life. Their Elizabeth Gaskell adapations are some of the few times when I'll say "The movies are even better (and in the case of "North & South" much much better) than the books!"

The lives of villagers in Cranford are chronicled in this five-part series. Dame Judi Dench is superb as the retiring sister of a much more outspoken, firmly conservative spinster, played by Dame Eileen Atkins. There is romance, despair, hope, and death, all tied together in a way which brings delight.

This was the best movie I have ever seen. I first watched it on Masterpiece Theatre and I was speachless. The entire thing "especially the ending" was just incredible. It was extremely suspenseful and shocking. It has an all- star cast. "See cast list on ther tab". Great cinemetography. If you love classics, this is the DVD for you. I definitely recommend this to anyone really, not just people who love classics. It was amazing. It something you are able to see again and again. For al ages.

A dreadful series! PBS is scraping the bottom of the British novel barrel. This series--which, yes, I sat through impatiently to the end--is nothing but a soap opera, built on contrived coincidences, lacking character motivation and sliding by genuine human emotion or social comment. It's a waste of good actors. Even worse, it points up why Western civilization is in so much trouble if people can get nostalgic and flowery about infantile pap like this.

Enjoy ALL the BBC Progamming that gets put on DVD. Judy Dench is one of my favorite actresses and portrays the most loving and caring Lady of Cranford village. Wonderful!!

Dame Judi Dench will have you tearing up with her brilliant portrayal of the humble, tender Matty. But truly the entire cast is superb in this sublime masterpiece. Have the tissues handy and prepare to be swept away by the enchantment that is Cranford.
