Anyone compiling a list of the great cop shows that failed to catch on, despite a core audience of loyal fans and critical acclaim to spare, would be advised to add Crime Story near the top. A great show, set in 1960s Chicago and featuring not only a continuing story arc and nifty period trappings but a legitimate Windy City cop at the center -- Dennis Farina -- Crime Story deserves to stand alongside Homicide, Wiseguy, and NYPD Blue in the police-procedural pantheon. Farina, making the transition from collaring crooks for the good of the city to doing it for the entertainment of millions, brings brusque verisimilitude to the role of Lt. Mike Torello. His series-long pursuit of Ray Luca (Anthony Denison), eventually following him to Las Vegas as part of a federal task force, makes the program especially marathon-worthy on DVD. This first season boasts lots of familiar faces in pre-stardom turns, including Bill Campbell as Det. Joey Indelli and Stephen Lang as Assistant D.A. David Abrams. The before-they-were-stars jamboree is about as juicy as it gets, with David Caruso, Andrew "Dice" Clay, Ted Levine, Eric Bogosian, Michael Rooker, Pam Grier, Michael Madsen, Ving Rhames, Gary Sinise, Lorraine Bracco, Debbie Harry, Vincent Gallo, and even Julia Roberts, for goodness' sake! With Michael Mann as executive producer, indie auteur Abel Ferrara directing, and music from Todd Rundgren, Crime Story's pedigree couldn't be cooler. The 21 episodes included on the Season 1 collection are:
  • "Pilot"
  • "Final Transmission"
  • "Shadow Dancer"
  • "The Saint Louis Book of Blues"
  • "The War"
  • "Abrams for the Defense"
  • "Pursuit of a Wanted Felon"
  • "Old Friends, Dead Ends"
  • "Justice Hits the Skids"
  • "For Love or Money"
  • "Crime Pays" (unaired)
  • "Hide and Go Thief"
  • "Strange Bedfellows"
  • "Fatal Crossroads" (a.k.a. "Fortune in Men's Eyes")
  • "Torello on Trial"
  • "Kingdom of Money"
  • "The Battle of Las Vegas"
  • "The Survivor"
  • "The Pinnacle"
  • "Top of the World" (a.k.a. "The King in a Cage")
  • "Ground Zero"

I bought this set and let it sit on my shelf for five weeks. Yesterday, after watching CSI for the second time, I remembered Crime Story. What a delight! Instead of single episodes about one incident, this was actually a story! I was very late getting to bed. I kept hoping for Ray Luca to get captured before he butchered some other character that I had grown attached to. If there is at least more season--I hope it gets released soon

Even if you have the series on VHS, this is still a must have. Great Music, great plot, and great scenery, all look MUCH better in the DVD format.

I have loved this series, since I first saw it. I graduated school in the 60's and as a midwesterner, I have been to Chicago. Not only is the story itself great, but the music and cars bring back memories too! While I have mentioned many other series I love below, this series is one of the very few dealing with Chicago instead of the Western or Eastern areas of the country. For those wishing for another season? There is a Season 2. It is coming late this summer or fall. I will be watching to see when it can be ordered from B&N
