Dramatizing the high-tech sleuthing we first saw on A&E's Cold Case Files, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation takes the relative minutiae of forensic science and fleshes them out to great effect. William Petersen (The Contender) stars as Officer Gil Grissom, the forensics guru of the Las Vegas CSI team whose fluency in hair follicles, bullet trajectories, and entry wounds helps the city solve some of its more confounding crimes. Peterson is joined by a solid ensemble cast (including two-time Golden Globe nominee Marg Helgenberger) that effectively creates an atmosphere where interdepartmental zeal for solving cases is de rigeur. There are, to be sure, clichéd aspects of CSI. Peterson, however, does a yeoman job as the forensics-obsessed Grissom, and his portrayal brings an uncommon depth and texture that enables CSI to stay afloat in a sea of otherwise boilerplate cop shows. This six-disc set includes all 23 episodes of CSI's debut season, plus a supplemental music video and the featurette "People Lie...but the Evidence Never Does."
