Overview

Dancing At The Blue Iguana

Michael Radford's film about the lives of strippers, Dancing at the Blue Iguana, comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The closed-captioned English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. English and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include a commentary track recorded by the director, additional commentary from people involved in the production, a making-of documentary, alternate scenes, and the trailer. This is a solid presentation of a little-seen film from Trimark.

The movie follows the lives of 5 stripper at the Blue Iguana club. This movie could have been a lot like the Joy Luck Club as we watch how each of these characters change through their experiences. Unfortunately, the only engaging story I found was about Jasmine (Sandra Oh) who tries to find love. Too much time was spend with Angel (Darryl Hannah) who is good-natured but so naive that when things don't work out for her you can't feel too sympathetic. I wanted to see the story of Jessie (Charlotte Ayanna) more developed. Had all the stories been as interesting as the Jasmine's, this could have been a pretty good film. Instead, it's a film that was only partly realized. I thought the acting was fine (particularly Oh and Ayanna). There is a lot of nudity in this movie.
