Overview

French filmmaker Josée Dayan directs the erotic drama Les Liaisons Dangereuses, based on the 18th century novel by Choderlos de Laclos and updated by screenwriter Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt. A co-production of France and Canada, this French-language television miniseries is reimagined with a swinging '60s setting. Madame de Mertueil (Catherine Deneuve) and Vicomte de Valmont (Rupert Everett) are a couple of wealthy and seductive aristocrats. Advancing in years, Mertueil grows jealous when she learns that her old flame Gercourt (Andrzej Zulawski) is planning to marry the much younger Cécile Volanges (Leelee Sobieski). The bored rich couple plot a scheme to have Valmont seduce Cécile before the wedding. Valmont also goes to visit Rosemonde (Danielle Darrieux) in Saint Tropez, where he meets the married woman Marie Tourvel (Nastassja Kinski). Featuring a musical score by Angelo Badalamenti and period costumes by Jean-Paul Gaultier. Les Liaisons Dangereuses premiered on U.S. television on WE: Women's Entertainment in March 2004. This DVD release from Wellspring is the 200-minute version. Presented with an anamorphic widescreen transfer. The English soundtrack is available in Dolby Digital Stereo or Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround. Special features include photo galleries, filmographies, and web links.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The latest in a string of all-star TV miniseries made for French TV and adapted from literary masterpieces, this elaborate, updated version of Pierre de Laclos's Les Liaisons Dangereuses boasts a sensational cast headed by Catherine Deneuve, Rupert Everett, and Nastassja Kinski. It's set in the 1960s, as a pair of wealthy, decadent, aging cynics -- foundation director Madame de Merteuil (Deneuve) and famous photographer Valmont (Everett) -- test each other's powers of seduction just for the fun of it. Madame takes umbrage when a former lover becomes engaged to her young goddaughter (Leelee Sobieski) and determines to sabotage the relationship, while Valmont pursues a virtuous wife (Kinski) who is aware of his roguish reputation yet gradually finds herself attracted to him nonetheless. Director Josee Dayan isn't the first to place this tale in modern times -- it was done in 1999 as Cruel Intentions -- but choosing the Swinging '60s was inspired, because that era's rejection of bourgeois values and sexual repressiveness makes the story's gamesmanship more believable. The still-beautiful, icily seductive Deneuve has no trouble convincing the viewer that she was once an irresistible heartbreaker, and the suave Everett, now middle-aged, is letter-perfect as a manipulative Don Juan. Dayan's direction of Eric Schmitt's screenplay adds a subtle, enticing fillip by suggesting that Valmont might be a bisexual with something of a vendetta against women. Kinski, who would make a wonderful Merteuil herself, plays Madame Tourvel with the utmost skill, and Sobieski turns in a solid performance as the young innocent who becomes the unknowing object of Merteuil's malevolence. In part due its length, the miniseries lacks the intensity of Stephen Frears's 1988 period version starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich, and Uma Thurman, but the production is luxurious and the characters just as compellingly reprehensible as ever.
