Overview

In letters released after her death, beloved British novelist Dame Daphne du Maurier (Rebecca, Jamaica Inn, Frenchman's Creek) revealed that throughout her life as a loving wife and mother, she felt like "a boy in a box." Her very personal letters come alive in this BBC biopic about the author's secret love life, starring Geraldine Somerville. Discover how du Maurier's bisexuality informed her writing, and how her play about forbidden desire -- Stella -- led to a love affair with actress Gertrude Lawrence. Directed by Clare Beavan and written by Amy Jenkins (creator of This Life) and, for the first time ever, with the cooperation of the du Maurier estate, this period drama reveals the untold story of this fascinating writer's life. Includes the 40-minute extra, Vanishing Cornwall, based on du Maurier's book and directed by her son. Daphne originally aired on BBC2 in May of 2007.
