Overview

Despicable Me

A mysterious criminal mastermind has stolen one of the pyramids in Egypt, sparking a fit of jealous envy in evil genius Gru (Steve Carell), who hasn't managed to make headlines since he and his minions swiped the Times Square JumboTron years back. Ever since Gru was a little boy, he dreamed of going to the moon. Now, if Gru can just build a rocket and get his hands on a powerful shrink-ray, he can cement his reputation as the greatest thief who ever lived by stealing the Earth's satellite right out of the sky. But immediately after Gru heists the shrink-ray, the cunning super-nerd Vector (Jason Segel) swoops in and snatches it right out of his hands. Now, in order to claim the moon, Gru must first reacquire the weapon from Vector. Armed with the knowledge that his nemesis has a mean sweet tooth, Gru adopts cookie-selling orphans Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Agnes (Elsie Fisher), and Edith (Dana Gaier) and commissions a new line of cookie robots from the evil Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand), his personal weapons specialist. But as Gru and his diminutive yellow minions prepare to carry out the biggest heist in history, something strange happens. Gru discovers that the three little girls who have come into his life are much more than simple pawns. They actually seem to care about Gru, and it turns out the scheming evildoer makes a pretty good father. When Gru realizes that his upcoming moon mission clashes with a ballet performance by the girls, he must decide what's more important -- being a present parent or cementing his nefarious reputation once and for all.

Despicable me is a great movie. It is truly a movie that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. The story is about an evil villain named Gru. Although seemingly like the average villain, Gru is nowhere near ordinary. He has adorable minions that look like yellow peanuts wearing glasses and speaking in their own language. The movie has a funny take on the world of evil villains. The villains compete against each other and go to a special secret bank to get loans for their evil projects. Gru is determined to beat out his enemy, Vector. In order to achieve his grand project, steal the moon, he has to go to all sorts of lengths. He even ends up adopting three girls he met when they were selling girl-scout cookies. This movie will make you laugh, cry, and laugh again. It is great for watching with your friends and family or just by yourself and it will leave you wanting to see it again.

Nice storyline and will have you laughing-out-loud at times. Even though the plot of the storyline is not an original one the voice talents of the "cast of characters" and especially the antics of the minions will make this a real treat and worth watching. Select this DVD if you would like a nice escape from your reality and want to laugh and release some stress. *Good entertainment.

I had decided early on that I didn't plan on watching this movie. The commercials for the movie looked silly to me, and so I immediately decided not to waste my time on it. It was no waste of time! What a great movie for kids! I thought it was going to be another silly little movie without any lessons to be learned from it,full of potty humor, and the not-so-family-friendly style that all of the new tv shows for kids are broadcasting now. This movie did have lessons for the kids in the audience, very little potty humor, and was so family friendly! With the cute story line that starts with Gru, the main character, as a not-so-evil villian being beaten out by a younger super villian...it continues from there with lots of laughs and lots of cute little yellow henchmen. This movie is a great FAMILY movie (the kind Hollywood doesn't make anymore).

I totally recommend this movie for all ages! It doesn't matter how old you are, but you will love it. Vector steals the pyramid of Egypt. Gru doesn't like that, because he wants to be the biggest and ONLY thief in the world. Gru tries to still the moon, so he can still be the biggest thief in the world. He adopts three orphans, Margo, Edith, and Agnes. But he uses them to get in Vectors house to sell "cookies". The cookies are really spying little robots. Then something weird happens, Gru finds himself profoundly changed by the growing love between him and the three orphans. Will he change his mind from stealing the moon?

I avoid kids movie whenever possible, especially animated films, but I ended up going to see this, in 3-D, with my two little boys last summer when my husband was out of town. I laughed so hard that my face hurt! I insisted that my husband take the boys as soon as he got back. The writing for this film was amazing! Genious! Truly a film for families that everyone can enjoy! A must see, and a must own! LOVE IT!
