Cheesy effects and some plot points that don't make much sense, but if you're not OK with that, then you don't like Doctor Who at all! This title collects the all episodes about the Silurians and their cousins, the Sea Devils, plus tons of extras. All the plots are essentially the same. Silurians/Sea Devils/Both attack the humans, the Doctor attempts to talk peace, peace attempts fail, and the Doctor is forced to destroy them or help destroy them. The first one highlights the ideological conflict between the Doctor and the Brigadier, the second one features the Master and is something of a tribute to the Royal Navy, and the third has a human Cold War setting which makes things more interesting (and the Myrka, arguably the most laugh-out-loud Doctor Who effect ever made). The best part is the Beneath the Surface featurette, a half-hour documentary on the socio-political background of the Silurians episodes, and how that effected the writing of those episodes. Highly recommended for any Doctor Who fan, and a good place to start for newbies.

Contains the two Pertwee stores ("The Silurians"; "The Sea Devils") plus the Davison sequel ("Warriors From the Deep"). The Pertwee adventures are long-ish but very well written and very engaging (especially the second one); the Davison adventure is a bit less successful. The sets are amazing, the costumes a mix of very good and rather odd, plus one of the most disastrous monster costumes of all time. The story, however, is very close to being great. The extra features on the set are very informative and go a long way to illuminating the stories they support. The remastering on the Pertwee stories is beautifully done (not surprising at all considering the Restoration Team's body of work). All-in-all a very solid and entertaining box set.
